How The Tdcs Process Works And Its Many Merits To Patients

By Della Monroe

The transcranial direct stimulation therapy is a process that has been used to treat patients with brain injuries like stroke. This therapy is quite simple and can be carried out at a health unit or even the home of a patient. It involves the stimulation of brain neurons with some electric current which is passed through the head from one point to another point in the opposite direction. Tdcs is a critical process and requires professionalism in its undertaking. It should therefore be carried out by an expert with the experience on how the therapy works.

The transcranial direct stimulation therapy has also been known to help with more conditions in patients such as helping improve the problem solving skills of an individual, reducing memory loss, raising the attention span of an individual, helping with language understanding and more. These different behavior changes can be achieved when the therapist uses current to stimulate different neurons of the brain.

Electric current can be passed through the brain in two different modes. Each mode brings about a different desired result. Current may be passed from the positively charged electrode which is the anode towards the negatively charged electrode which is the cathode. It can also be passed in the opposite direction which is from the cathode towards the anode.

Electric current is used to cause an excitement of neurons in the brain. This is done by either increasing their excitement or reducing it. When the current flows from the positively charged electrode towards the negatively charged electrode, the resulting effect is an increase in the excitement of neurons. If the current flows from the negatively charged electrode towards the positive electrode, the resulting effect is a reduction in the excitement of neurons. The different resulting effects lead to different behaviors shown by the patient.

This therapy is simple. It only requires the necessary equipment and some skills in rendering it. You need to have a powered device that can pass constant direct current during the exercise. You also need electrodes to help you pass current through the head of a patient. The number of electrodes to be used will vary depending on a therapist. Traditional methods have only been using two electrodes but modern methods use more than two.

Different therapists carry out the therapy in different ways. However, the common process involves cleaning the skin of the scalp where the electrodes will be placed. The electrodes are then placed carefully on the scalp and connected strongly to ensure there is a solid connection to effectively pass current from the electrodes to the skin.

Turn the power device on to generate and pass direct current through the head of the patient. The current is allowed to pass on gradually. It can be increased or decreased gradually as the therapist desires.

Modern technology has enabled the advancement of this therapy. In modern times, more electrodes that are smaller and more effective are used. The use of many smaller electrodes enables therapists to be able to target specific sectors of the brain and therefore achieve more effectiveness in results
