The Tdcs Process And Its Merits

By Edna Booker

You may have heard about this form of therapy that is taking place in modern therapy world but not quite understood what it all entails. Well, tdcs or transcranial direct current stimulation is a form of therapy that is quite unique as it uses electric current to stimulate the performance of brain neurons. This in turn affects the performance of certain activities such as problem solving and memory state. The process uses electrodes which allow the flow of current from either the positive side or negative side, through the brain and the opposite side of the area being stimulated. This can be the neck, shoulder or head.

The treatment has however been advanced and its applications made diverse. It can now be used to treat various different disparities in the brain such as improving attention span, reducing memory loss, increasing problem solving abilities and more. The different effects achieved with this process are attained by placing the electrodes at different points of the head to stimulate different neurons. The therapy is safe to use provided that all guidelines regarding its safety are adhered to.

The therapy simply works by allowing the current to pass through a positively charged electrode, to the brain neurons and to a negatively charged electrode on the other side of the first electrode. These electrodes should be carefully placed on the scalp at the designated points which require stimulation. Wrong placing will lead to an unsuccessful achievement of required results.

The current is used to excite or reduce the excitement of neurons at the specific targeted areas in the brain. If the current flows from the anode electrode, that is the positively charged electrode, there will be an increase in the excitement of neurons. If the current flows from the cathode electrode which is negatively charged, the excitement of neurons will be reduced. This leads to the attainment of different behaviors as required by the therapist.

The process is quite easy and simple to set up provided that you have all the necessary equipment and skills needed to conduct it. First you need a power source that can deliver you direct constant current throughout the procedure. You also need an anode and cathode electrodes which are positively and negatively charged respectively. The electrodes should have pads that enable you to place them correctly and effectively on the scalp of a patient.

You should then prepare the skin where the electrodes will be placed at the scalp. This should be done to ensure that the electrodes have a strong connection to the skin for maximum effectiveness. The pads used for connecting the electrodes to the skin are different in styles and designs. The smaller and many in numbers that they are, the better they will be able to create a stronger connection.

The power is then turned on and timed for a specific time. The current should be allowed to flow gradually. It can then be adjusted by increasing or reducing it to achieve a desired effect level. It should then automatically turn itself off.

Modern transcranial simulation therapy has advanced to using several electrodes other that the common one which uses two. This enables maximum stimulation. The results from this are thus more long lasting and effective.
