Factors That Are Looked Into During Classroom Walkthroughs

By Janine Hughes

Different classroom setting has an indirect effect to the learning of the students. But identifying these factors can be tricky especially if the patterns show varied and changing results. To constantly have an idea of what mode of teaching produces good response from the students, head of departments sit down on classes from time to time.

Through their random visits, they get an idea on how well the class is doing and if they are reacting well to the type of teaching that their mentors employ. Classroom walkthroughs are good avenues for them to examine that status of education in their institutions and whether or not their faculty is adhering to the standards that they have set. Below are the things that heads of the departments note down.

Classroom behavior. This refers to how behave the students are in the presence of their teacher. A good mentor knows how to handle the class well, get them disciplined without resorting to threats and start the lesson with everyones attention on board. This factor speaks a lot about the teacher and his impact to the participants.

Lesson plans prepared by teachers. The observers need not to take a peek at an actual written lesson plan. Judging from the delivery of the lesson, he can see the contents of the discussion and its arrangement. It will also give him an idea of the speed by which students are taught and whether or not it is effective.

Instructional practice. This refers to the way on how the teacher carries out his lessons. A boring class will only be boring if the teacher does not know how to build an environment where students can have fun while learning. The motivations that he use during the lessons will also fall in this category.

Reading and writing comprehension. The observation process also covers how well the participants understand the writings on the board and how well they perform on their reading comprehension activities. This is an important determining factor to learn about the forte of the whole class and what mode of discussion works for them best.

Feedback. Questions asked to the teachers are not bad things. In fact, it is a good sign that the student is listening and is willing to learn more about the topic. The way on how the teacher addresses the person and how he complements them is a good practice in interaction.

Professionalism. Expertise is one, the attitude is another thing. As the facilitator of the class, teachers need to have the right set of attitude in conducting their lessons. They should come in on time and should observe proper decorum. Participants will respect and trust them if they show a good example and couple their knowledge with character.

Despite the popularity of walkthroughs, there are various institutions that do not employ this method. There is nothing wrong with that. This mode is done as means to gather data and to know the areas of teaching that need to be improved. Those who manage to devise a different way in getting these information may do away with this procedure.
